Originellement composé de Roger Waters à la basse, Richard Wright au clavier, Nick Mason à la batterie et de Roger "Syd" Barrett à la guitare et au chant. Pink Floyd va très vite poser les bases d'une musique originale, libérée des racines blues, planante voire menaçante ('Astronomy Domine'). Malheureusement, Syd Barrett, compositeur de génie, est rattrapé par la folie. Il sera remplacé en 1968, par le virtuose David Gilmour durant l'enregistrement de leur second album ('A saucerful of Secrets'). Marqué par la perte de Barrett, le groupe va creuser le sillon psychédélique, errant à la recherche du génie original, sous la houlette de Roger Waters. C'est en 1971, avec l'album 'Meddle', que le groupe retrouve les sommets de l'inspiration ('Echoes'). En 1973, Pink Floyd change de cap et livre le très perturbé et révolutionnaire 'Dark Side of the Moon'. Le groupe sera victime d'un succès phénoménal, qui force son retour à l'introspection en 1975 sur 'Wish You Were Here'. Gagné par le cynisme et les conflits d'ego, sa musique deviendra de plus en plus sombre, atteignant des sommets sur 'The wall' en 1977, son deuxième plus gros succès. Conséquemment, le groupe va imploser et connaîtra un veine plus commerciale dans sa survivance à travers David Gilmour et Nick Mason ('Division Bell').
